About the Program
On January 17, 2020, Governor Murphy signed S-2252 into law (P.L.2019, c.362), which created an incentive program for light-duty electric vehicles and at-home electric charging infrastructure. Charge Up New Jersey promotes clean vehicle adoption in the state by offering incentives of up to $4,000 for the purchase or lease of new, eligible zero-emission vehicles, including battery electric and plug-in hybrid electric. By shifting away from gasoline and diesel use, it creates many environmental and economic benefits, including less air pollution and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
Incentive Amounts
- The Charge Up incentive provides $1,500 to eligible New Jersey residents for the purchase or lease of a new eligible EV.
- The Charge Up+ incentive provides an additional $2,500 for income-qualifying applicants, for a total incentive of $4,000.
- Charge Up New Jersey also offers up to $250 for the purchase of a qualifying Level 2 charger through the In-Home EV Charger Incentive.
Program Eligibility and Application Process
For eligible vehicles, the Charge Up incentive of $1,500 is applied at the point-of-sale at an eligible dealership. To claim the $4,000 Charge Up+ incentive, applicants must pre-qualify prior to the vehicle's sale or lease by applying online through the program portal and obtaining a pre-qualification ID. Information on the eligibility guidelines, eligible vehicles, and eligible dealerships can be found at the links below:
