Background Information
The State of New Jersey signed its Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) into law on February 9, 1999. The RPS requires electricity suppliers to source a certain percentage of their retail sales from qualified renewable energy sources which increases demand for renewables, drives investment, reduces greenhouse‐gas emissions, diversifies energy supply, and stimulates economic development. Over the years, the RPS has been revised to adjust targets, technologies, carve‐outs (e.g., solar, offshore wind), compliance mechanisms, and cost‐caps.
